It's Working!!
Unplugging from content that does not serve my creative mindset is a success—at least it feels like it. I’m experiencing sensations that I can only describe as coming out of a fog. Ideas and threads of inspiration are more easily manifesting themselves and seem closer to my fingertips. Some of the concepts that I formulate are still a bit fuzzy, but I’m seeing them more clearly and more frequently. Where this is all going to take me is unclear, but I am excited to be on this new path.
It occurs to me that any future readers of this space are going to need some context, and since this will turn into blog number three, it is probably appropriate to tell you a little about me. Since I respect your time, I will give you a short bullet list of the highlights and facts of my life so far.
About Me
- Born in Southern California
- Grew up in a mid-size town on the coast of Oregon
- Mom ran a community theater and my father was a working sculptor
- Started racing road bicycles at 14, and discovered that I was fairly decent at it
- Left my hometown two weeks after high school graduation to move to Southern California to pursue a cycling career
- Spent the last two years of my cycling career racing as an amateur in Europe—in Belgium and The Netherlands
- For various reasons, decided to “retire” from competitive cycling
- Discovered photography and went to Savannah College of Art and Design to pursue a degree
- Met my wife and got married
- Got my degree, but in Motion Graphics and Graphic Design
- Moved to Seattle, WA, and got a job in tech before tech was a thing
- Worked in tech—product design—for 18 years, and while thankful for the financial benefits, ended up wondering if it was time to pursue other things
- That gets us pretty much to today, and Discoastal Culture Collective
Discoastal Culture Collective, my new creative endeavor that I am working on with a friend, is going quite well. There is momentum and motivation to grind on the various pieces of it that were not there before. Discoastal is primarily a vehicle for curiosity and creativity with a focus on ambient electronic music, abstract visuals, and graphic design. While we have big ideas and dreams of what this platform could turn into, we are open to the journey of finding out what it wants to be. Stay tuned!
